Stabilized Zapruder Film

Someone has taken the Zapruder film (of the assassination of President Kennedy) and stabilized it via computer graphics. This is sad to see but at the same time it's pretty damn cool to be able to view a piece of American History. It may take a minute to load but it is well worth it...

China's Three Gorges Project

Here are some great pics of China's Three Gorges Dam:

China's Three Gorges Project is the largest water conservation project in the world. Taking the total amount of concrete work as one example, the Three Gorges Project totals 26.43 million cubic meters, 2.5 times the figure for the Gezhouba Barrage project and twice that of the Itaipu project in Brazil, which is currently the largest water conservation projects in the world. Amazing photos.

This is great news!

My fellow blogger just posted a funny link I sent him! He totally gave me credit!!! I consider his website one of the BEST on the internet so I am honored to be mentioned. Thanks (Look at This)! Did I mention Newcastle was one of my favorite cities?

Here is the funny link I sent. It is a segment of standup comedian Bill Hicks describing marijuana.

Rockin' in the Free World!

Neil Young is an outspoken activist and has a successful recording career spanning over FORTY years!!! Some of his music will go down in history as arguably the best songs ever written.

Here is a link to his latest album, in it's entirety, FREE ONLINE! You can leave it open on your computer while you do your other work.

The music has a good beat and a great message (I like song #3. Restless Consumer)! The last song on the album is a stirring rendition of "America The Beautiful" that deserves to be listened to! I respect him for using his talent to make a statement about what's going on in America right now.

Too bad he's a CANADIAN!!!

Who needs a sailboat?

I can just attach a small sail directly to my back and sail away forever! I can forget about the cost and maintenance of owning a boat!

Okay, maybe not! But here are some pics of some men and (my favorite) their fish taken by photographer Emmanuel Donfut!

Apocalypto

Mel Gibson may be great at making controversial movies but he sure sucks at spelling:

Decemeber?

NO!

Update! As of 29 April they have corrected their misspelling... I guess they got our email!?

Dogs in space (and cats)

I had no idea so many brave animals have been up in space!?! From frogs, to spiders, to cats, to monkeys:
Scientists in the Soviet Union were sure that organisms from Earth could live in space. To demonstrate that, they sent the world's second artificial space satellite — Sputnik 2 — to space from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on November 3, 1957. On board was a live mongrel dog named Laika (Barker in Russian) on a life-support system.

While other animals had made suborbital flights, Laika was the first animal to go into orbit. She suffered no ill effects while she was alive in an orbit at an altitude near 2,000 miles.

The American press nicknamed the dog Muttnik. She captured the hearts of people around the world as the batteries that operated her life-support system ran down and the capsule air ran out. Life slipped away from Laika a few days into her journey. Later, Sputnik 2 fell into the atmosphere and burned on April 14, 1958.
Poor Muttnik, or Laika, or whatever his name was... He died for a good cause.

This is the grossest thing in the world:

Useless inventions

Actually, some of them may not be such a bad idea:
Chingdogu: the not-so-ancient Japanese art of inventing ingenious everyday gadgets that, on the face of it, seem like an ideal solution to a particular problem. However, Chindogu has a distinctive feature: anyone actually attempting to use one of these inventions, would find that it causes so many new problems, or such significant social embarrassment, that effectively it has no utility whatsoever.

Half-baked concert promotion

This was in the Chicago Sun Times (online) this morning:
Reporters covering an event at Washington Park Thursday were given something more than just a press release -- they were offered rolling papers, commonly used to smoke pot.
The rolling papers were set up on a press table a few feet from a playground and advertised the Lollapalooza music festival as "fully baked rock and roll.''

A list of terms for illegal drugs on the online site Wikipedia defines "baked" as "intoxicated from marijuana use.''

Chicago Park District Supt. Timothy Mitchell was unaware of the rolling papers, which are also used to make tobacco cigarettes. After being asked about them, a startled Mitchell ordered them removed.

Later, both Mitchell and Lollapalooza organizers called the offer of rolling papers in a city park a mistake.
Dear GOD NO! Not rolling papers!!! Just think of the message!!! Somebody might confuse harmless, legal, cigarrette rolling papers with "illegal drugs" and get "baked". Thank GOD they were removed before the children got to see what they can see in ANY convenience store!

The Universe Within

Take a quick trip from the outer limits of the galaxy all the way down to a quark (whatever that is?):
View the Milky Way at 10 million light years from the Earth. Then move through space towards the Earth in successive orders of magnitude until you reach a tall oak tree just outside the buildings of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida. After that, begin to move from the actual size of a leaf into a microscopic world that reveals leaf cell walls, the cell nucleus, chromatin, DNA and finally, into the subatomic universe of electrons and protons.

Visit Tewksbury. Get haircut. Be happy.

I think this is a great idea:

A man from Tewksbury, Mass., wants to open a barbershop where the female hairstylists would wear lingerie. Men would be able to set up appointments with their favorite stylist and even choose what they wear.

Neighbors are not happy with the idea. "Anybody who really needed a haircut wouldn't go to a place like this," Mary-Francis Labrecque said.

"This is strictly about cutting hair and marketing," developer and "Paradise Cuts" owner Peter Carlino said. "You've got girls who wear less clothing on a daily basis than the girls who will be cutting hair."

There's a sucker born every minute!

Delta employees volunteer

My friend, who works for United Air Lines, sent me this email from (competing) Delta Air Lines. I'm sure they had a great laugh over at UAL:

Delta Air Lines Invites Employees to Volunteer to Help Clean Aircraft in Effort to Boost Morale
ATLANTA (AP) -- Delta Air Lines Inc. said Friday it is inviting employees to volunteer to help clean aircraft in an effort to boost morale and improve customer service at the nation's third-largest carrier. Employees who volunteer aren't being paid for the work, but the Atlanta-based company said the effort is not a cost-cutting initiative. The initiative launched earlier this week includes increasing the frequency of aircraft deep cleans and refurbishing aircraft interiors. Delta said it is not eliminating its overnight cleaning crews, and it said it has committed millions of dollars in additional resources to support the cleaning effort. The company said dozens of Delta leaders, including several executives, so far have participated in cleaning activities in New York, Cincinnati, and Salt Lake City.
I would volunteer because in a company like Delta it's not how great you are as an employee, it's how much ASS you kiss as a suck-up!!!

The itbed

I wish that I had thought of this:
The itbed is made from 7 mm thick cardboard that is folded like an accordion. In one step the itbed can be collapsed into an easily portable bundle making the cardboard bed an ideal solution for guest beds or frequent movers. The zigzag profile of the itbed, reminiscent of a house of cards, is stabilized from head to foot by two lengths of webbing.

Razzle Dazzle

During World War I, the British and Americans faced a serious threat from German U-boats, which were sinking allied shipping at a dangerous rate. All attempts to camouflage ships at sea had failed, as the appearance of the sea and sky are always changing. Any color scheme that was concealing in one situation was conspicuous in others. A British artist and naval officer, Norman Wilkinson, promoted a new camouflage scheme that was derived from the artistic fashions of the time, particularly cubism. Instead of trying to conceal the ship, it simply broke up its lines and made it more difficult for the U-boat captain to determine the ship's course. The British called this camouflage scheme "Dazzle Painting." The Americans called it "Razzle Dazzle."

Unbelievable sculptures

These are some incredibly realistic sculptures!
Ron Mueck (born 1958) is an Australian hyper-realist sculptor working in Great Britain. USA aint so bad

Maybe it's not so bad living in America? I think we should take this seriously and make sure it never happens to us!

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has recorded details of more than 96 percent of its population on a police database, state media reported on Friday, supplementing Internet and other state-sanctioned surveillance.

The database is just one way in which China keeps tabs on its
citizens.

An estimated 30,000 Web police monitor the surfing habits of China's 110 million internet users, and restrict access to Web sites and blogs posting sensitive material, including topics related to democracy or independence for Tibet and Taiwan.

If George Bush had his way he would want the same thing for his country, to protect us from terror of course!

The Hydrofoil Water Scooter

This is a cool machine! It's not quite a boat and not quite a scooter:
Unlike other watercraft, this unique hydrofoil frame allows you to skim across water simply by hopping gently up and down, propelling you as fast as 17 mph (more than four times faster than some world champion freestyle swimming
speeds).
Make sure you click on the Quicktime video clip to see the motor-less scooter in action. It's pretty cool!
