Loans That Change Lives

Kiva is an organization that helps entrepreneurs in third-world countries get funding for their business projects:
This group lets you make microloans to fund specific small business ventures for people in poverty in third world countries. One guy took out and repaid (in 2 months) a $25 loan for bicycle parts to start a sidewalk repair business that now feeds his whole family, including his dead brothers children. The repayment rate on these loans is 96%!!!

Miss America's Famous Alumni

Forbes magazine has a slideshow/article of former Miss Americas. Why, I do not know?

Vanessa Williams, “Miss New York” - 1984 - Williams made history when she became the first African-American to win the crown. But her reign came to an abrupt end when she relinquished her crown following revelations that she had posed nude.
Nude? If I recall correctly she was more than nude. She was in Penthouse magazine getting busy with another female in a very sexually suggestive way. If anyone has seen those pics on the internet you can forward them to me, FOR RESEARCH purposes only:

Amazing pics of the world's largest railway model. The fabricated cityscapes are more interesting than the model train. There's even a mini-Las Vegas (pictured):

Hamburg's warehouse district is home to one of the world's largest model railway tracks. Every half hour, day turns to night in this miniature world. This is one of the biggest mock-up railways of the world. Over 450 railway carriages with more than 7.000 trailers, 50.000 trees, 30.000 figures, 10.000 cars, 5.000 meters of track, 3.000 houses and plenty of bridges.

The 20 Greatest Historical Myths

I like this collection of historical myths:
Van Gogh is known as the archetypal starving artist, only selling one painting in his lifetime, and - in a quarrel with Gauguin - slicing off his ear, not long before committing suicide. Though he did face a tragic end, and his own paintings sold poorly, it is worth noting that he spent most of his life teaching and dealing art. He only spent eight years of his life painting, which helps to explain why he didn't starve to death. Also, he didn't slice off his entire ear, just a portion of his left lobe. Painful, but not nearly as bad as you might have thought.

10 Reasons You Aren't Rich

Maybe there are more reasons but here are ten good ones:
The reason why you aren't a millionaire (or on your way to becoming one) is really quite simple. You probably assume it's because you aren't earning enough money, but the truth is that for most people, whether or not you become a millionaire has very little to do with the amount of money you make. It's the way that you treat money in your daily life.

Why sentence structure is so important...

The boss had to fire somebody, and he narrowed it down to one of two people, Debra or Jack. It was an impossible decision because they were both super workers. Rather than flip a coin, he decided he would fire the first one who used the water cooler the next morning.

Debra came in the next morning with a horrible hangover after partying all night. She went to the cooler to take an aspirin. The boss approached her and said, "Debra, I've never done this before, but I have to lay you or Jack off."

"Could you jack off?" she says. "I feel like shit."

Strange Religion

This is a pic of the newly constructed Catholic Church near my house. It is located on the campus of St. Thomas University here in the Montrose Area of Houston, Texas. This would make a great museum, or Muslim Temple, but it makes for a rather odd looking church. The slit on the right of the facade is the front door.

Here is a closer view of the front door. It looks more like an accident than a welcoming portal of hope and inspiration.

Here is an even closer view. That's me in the reflection of the front doors hidden insider there. (Click on any of the pics to view the bigger file.)

This is a view from the front doors looking out at the campus. It would be a great entrance for a museum or a contemporary home but it doesn't seem appropriate for a place of worship.

This is the west side of the "church". Why did the architect make the cross seem almost comical? I think this would look much more powerful if the cross were still rotated off center but perpendicular to itself like a (properly squared) cross.

This is the most confusing thing of all. From the street it looks like a giant "plus" sign, which makes some sense. The church is just letting everyone in the neighborhood aware that operating tax free is always a cash positive venture. But look closely at the cross (click on the pic to see the bigger view). Why does it look like the cross is taller on the top than the bottom? Did they install it upside-down?
