Human Anatomy 101

Human autopsies are all the rage now but this is much, much more than just slicing up some dead bastard. This German Doctor-dude with a crazy hat explains the parts of the body and uses several different resources to explain his case, including a nude male model. It's very intense but extremely interesting and educational. This television series aired in the UK on Channel4 and I understand it was quite controversial:

These are the full clips of the programmes. These clips contain scenes of a graphic nature demonstrating disections of the human body. All bodies dissected were formally dedicated to the Institute for Plastination, Germany and the donors consented to their remains being used for educational purposes.

Billion Dollar Bridge

$1.2 Billion to be exact. China just completed construction on the longest bridge in the world (and most expensive) in preperations for the coming Olympics:

The bridge links Shanghai to the industrial city of Ningbo across Hangzhou Bay, cutting the distance between them from about 250 miles to just 50 miles.

Housesitting Nightmares

I enjoyed reading this hilarious NYT article about the true horrors of house-sitting:

Ms. Slavin, who is now a Southbury reporter for the weekly newspaper Voices in Connecticut, brought along a Welsh terrier named Taffy who hated cats. But Ms. Boudin, who was staying at the estate alone for a few days while her husband was in the city, had a solution: keep the dog outside and the cat in. The cat might not have been fully apprised, for one afternoon it went out.

The next time someone wants to rent a small space in your house, let them. USA Today has a great (long) article about the lady that opened her home to two aspiring computer engineers and the rest is history:

After earning her MBA in 1998, (Carol) Wojcicki bought 232 Santa Margarita Ave. for about $600,000. She rented the garage to two Stanford students for $1,700 a month to help with the mortgage. The renters: no ordinary slackers, but the Google Guys, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who incubated Google right there.

The article goes on to describe the fortunate luck that would shape the future (and families) of everyone involved, especially Carol...

Malawi Wowee

William Kamkwamba is from in the Kasungu district of Malawi, about 2-1/2 hours north of Lilongwe, Malawi's capital city. Not only did he build a windmill to generate electricity for his family, but he also (somehow) built a weblog to keep us updated:
